Synopsis: (y/n) and kenma were spending the last day of training camp outside when they turned around to see empty and abandoned streets. What happened to all the people? As night fell, locations lit up all around Tokyo. they head to one, thinking it would answer their questions, but really what awaited them was phones, a letter to take one and soon, death. Will Kenma and (y/n) survive in a world filled with death or will they die in the hands of the game just like the others? (masterlist is pinned and is under navigation!) a/n: are we back? We are back! Its been long time coming, sorry for taking so long for this! Hopefully this one doesn't really follow the text word for word again since I based it on the show, this one is going to be more based on the manga. Hope you guys enjoy this! Its been days since the beach burned down after the 10 of hearts. Games were suddenly halted and placed under an 'intermission' period. But you could care less. You had enough days on your visas to last you at least 20 days.In all honesty, you kind of lost count after entering the beach. For the first time since you arrived at the borderlands, you felt truly free, even if it's only for a few days. Free from the torment and games. free from the death and suffering. Free from all the worrying. You and kenma decided to join ann, arisu, usagi, kuina and the other survivors in their little makeshift group and talk about the fallen and their lost loved ones. For the first few days, you really enjoyed yourself. Kenma was finally able to get the rest he so desperately needed. He spent most of his time cuddled up beside you under the cool shade of the trees. the others joked around and actually had fun with golf and sports. they even got to ride a luxury car, curtesy of the mechanic, tatta. Things couldn't get any better. however, it didn’t take long before Things began to go downhill from there. It was the evening of your third day of freedom when fireworks erupted into the sky. Everyone in the small group began to panic as the big monitors in setagaya ward began to open. "kenma," you shook him awake frantically, your eyes locked on the once static turn to some kind of broadcast. "get up." you said nervously. Kenma grumbled into your lap, trying to squirm away from your touch. It was only when you didn't relent shaking him did he finally take it seriously and got up from your lap. "what is it, kitten?" he asked. Kenma turned to look at you then slowly turned to the direction you were staring at. A small crowd was forming by the big monitor where a seemingly anxious newscaster stumbled over their words. Kenma immediately took your quivering hand into his, rubbing it comfortingly as you both watched the poor girl announce an emergency press conference. A press conference? With who exactly? The girl stood back to show four people sitting at the large desk. "these are representatives in the citizens of the borderlands." the girl explained. The four figures were shrouded in darkness so only their figures were showing. "so those dealers follow someone higher than them?" kenma said. He suspected this much. In a casino, there are dealers that man the games and make sure everyone was playing fairly. There were also people who employ and tell these dealers what to do. They're finally making themselves known, huh? At least they know who they're after now. You listened intently as the man introduced as the king of diamonds congratulated players for clearing the games and getting this far. He began to talk about how your reward was finally knowing their existence and the little firework show that was akin to the fireworks you saw on the day you were brought here. After the king of diamonds finished his little speech, he passed the spotlight onto the king of clubs. He started stumbling over his words and laughing at his nervousness. Why was he nervous? Wasn't he the mastermind for the most horrifying games? He just had to speak in front a camera, broadcasted in front of all the players who went through his games. Was he trying to be down to earth and relatable? Well, it wasn't really working well. You scowled at the screen. Kenma could sense your anger bubbling up but he made no moves to stop it. He was getting irritated too. It was as if the representative of clubs were taunting them with his joyous personality. It was like he wasn't even sorry for all the deaths he caused. The king of spades spoke next. He began to talk about how the borderlands were the only way to remove all regrets. Regrets? What did regrets have to do with all of this? With all the pain and suffering? All this death only caused more regrets for you. Kenma felt you grip his hand tighter. Then last but not least, the queen of hearts. She began to talk about how the players were waiting for more valuable information or answers to their questions. She warned everyone to not expect anything else and to stop waiting for answers. It felt like she was talking to you personally. Is this the true powers of the queen of hearts? It felt like her voice was echoing in your mind. "it's about time you stopped seeking an answer. At it implies, these are all just games. Games are things to enjoy." this was messed. The players aren't the ones who were sick, it was her. It was so obvious. "so are you having fun?" No, no you weren't. you lost so many friends. So many people died in front of you, a handful of them died by your hand. Why are you here right now? Were you and kenma chosen? What did you guys do to deserve this? You had a ton of questions, and you wanted them all answered. You needed them answered. And the representatives seem to be the only ones who could answer you. But why did the queen's words want you to stop trying? Should you just give up and accept your fate now? "the game's next stage will begin at noon tomorrow." Then the monitors turned to static again. Kenma got up, pulling you up beside him. You could see the people that stood by the monitor drop to their knees and wail in disbelief, in shock, in anger. You would've broke down too, but you had no more tears to shed. Kenma hummed in thought for a moment, catching your attention. You turned toward him. "so the se four are the final bosses?" he said, mostly to himself. You tilted your head in confusion. You waited for him to elaborate. "I guess we have to defeat them to reap big rewards." he said, his eyes glistening with… determination? "you have got to be kidding-" "no." kenma cut you off. "participating might have more perks. We never know If only the winners of the games actually get the rewards." he explained. Still, you were still hesitant to agree. "what kind of rewards do you think we'll get if we participate in more of these games?" you asked. A cool breeze blew through you. You pulled your hand away to cross against your chest for warmth. If the suit games were difficult, you couldn't imagine how terrifying these face cards would be. The reward must be good enough to risk your lives over. "playing might grant us a pass back home." That caught your attention. Well, it did make sense. They'll only give passes to survivors who actually participated in defeating the face cards. But still, this is incredibly risky. Would the representatives sit in the sidelines while they watch people die for the chance of survival, or will they be playing against you? Would they even play fair? There was a big chance that they would play dirty and taunt you. It was totally unpredictable. "do you really want to risk it, ken?" you asked. You rubbed your hands over your arms. It felt like the sudden drop in morale that made tokyo colder than it had ever been. Kenma stood in front of you then, his warm hands replacing yours as he ran his hands up and down your arms for reassurance. Warmth immediately spreads to your body. His comfort always comforted you, even in situations like this. "if it means we can both get out of this place then yeah. We should risk it." he said. He waited for your response. He didn't want to push you to do something you didn't want to do. Kenma felt a wave of relief flood over him when he saw your smile. A smile he would always see if he talks about his video games or when he tells you a good strategy for stages. It was a smile reserved for him and only him. "well then, we should start prepping. Players shouldn't head to a boss battle unprepared, right?" you joked with a laugh. Your laugh is infectious. Soon, kenma was chuckling along with you as he lead you back to the main camp. You and kenma were eager to prepare for anything that comes your way, even if that meant you'd have to stay up the rest of the night trying to think of strategies and scenarios. And stay up you did. You and kenma didn't get a wink of sleep last night. You talked and talked about which game would be the safest for the two of you to face head on. Hearts could tear the two of you apart mentally. Spades is out of the question. You don't have enough stamina to keep running around. Kenma ruled out diamonds. you don't know the exact reason why. "we can get put against each other." kenma said then but you knew that even though that was more than plausible, there was something more when a game of diamonds comes to mind. You can't seem to put a finger on it. You decided not to pry. Clubs were the only option. An, kuina and the others were awake just after the sun went up. The carefree atmosphere was gone in one night. It was close to noon and the members now were as focused as ever, looking through binoculars and looking out for any indication of games. You looked up at the sky to see blimps with big tapestries flying overhead, getting into their positions. "they seem to indicate where the game venues are for each face card." An gestured to the blimps. She approached you, her sunglasses adding to her already serious physique. An could be considered one of the best in your little group. You remembered she was one of the executives at the beach. you only got to talk to her once, if being introduced by chishiya counted for talking. She wasn't as cold as you thought she was, rather She was nice and had a very logical mindset, a perfect leader. You didn't hesitate to trust her when you formally met after the destruction of their oasis. "okay, we spotted another one." the walkie-talkie sparked up. One of the lookouts that were stationed on the roof reported more and more of the blimps stopping in their designated spots. You walked over to one of the boy with the walkie talkie. "can you ask if they see the jack of clubs anywhere?" you asked with a polite smile. If they had to play, better get to a venue now before they run out of options. Tatta began to ramble about being trapped by the representatives and will be forced to play these games. He rambled about how the dealers met their demise because they won the last game. now you're in the final stages, finishing it might end everything. People began to argue around you, how the queen of hearts said that they shouldn't look for answers anymore. Paranoid theories began to sprout up too, how players will be subjected to play again when you finish the final face card. Kuina began to lecture them about fighting on your own but that just spiraled into more chaos. Their argument faded into a blur. You didn't want to listen. You didn't want to hear about going through all this pain again. Kenma was about to approach you when- BANG. BANG. BANG. In that single second, the voice on the other side of the walkie-talkie died and two corpses are on the ground next to you. "hide!" kuina yelled. Kenma dove towards you, bringing you behind one of the cars. "the king of spades!" yelled one before everyone began running behind cars and buildings for cover. "we have to get away from here now! if you're so much as spotted, you're dead!" arisu yelled from behind a building. "that gun can easily penetrate cars." kenma immediately led you on your hands and knees to the entrance of the empty alleyway. It was safer than hiding behind a car, not knowing where the sniper was aiming. He held you close, terrified of letting go of you for even a second. Arisu then split everyone into three groups of four. Should you get in with them? Before you could ask him, Kenma pulled you to the ground and brought you into the last car, closing the door behind him and letting the driver step on the gas. It was just past noon and everything already fell into chaos. This day was already unpredictable. But as long as kenma's beside you, you were sure to overcome anything these representatives threw at you. And that is all! hope you guys are as excited as i am!
