(masterlist is pinned and is under navigation!)

a/n: hey guys! I am so excited for this chapter! I decided to cut this into 2 chapters so sorry for the sudden cliffhanger. My friend and I made up the puzzles ourselves so try to figure out the puzzles as you read this! See if you can figure out the code before the actual characters! Let's get started!

If you thought the car ride was silent, you were sure that you could hear a pin drop in the silent tension in the elevator. Was it because of the pressure of the unknown or was it nerves? You started to feel the pressure weighing on your shoulders as the elevator's numbers went up and up and up.

"kitten," you hear kenma's soft voice beside you. You hummed and turned to look at him, pretending to be unfazed as you tried to ignore the numbers that continue to climb up in the corner of your eye. "we'll be fine. Just stick to the plan and I'm sure we can get through this game." he said to you, his tone sounded confident, as if he was stating a fact. But you knew better. You were sure that the cogs were turning in his head just like yours. He was trying to think of scenarios and how he can get everyone out of there alive. Usually, his analytical mind wouldn't really be an issue. He was used to thinking of strategies under-pressure during volleyball games. but right now, you can tell from the frigid stance and tense face that even a genius like him was in over his head.

How can he carry the group? How can he make sure that nothing happens to them, to you? What game would the jack have up their sleeve? What could he do to save you?

you did what you think was best to ease his mind.

"Hey Kenma," you said. You waited for him to hum and turn to you before you wrapped your arms around him, bringing him into a warm and comforting embrace. "I love you, okay? No matter what happens." you whispered.

You didn't care if Aiya was looking at you In disgust or if Haruto was staring at your little stunt with his jaw slack or even if Daiton pretended to ignore you. What mattered most to you right now was helping your boyfriend get out of his swirling thoughts and back to reality. Kenma stiffened slightly at the sudden action but quickly eased into your touch and returned the gesture. He nuzzled his face into your shoulder, hoping to hide the blush that started to spread to his cheeks.

Haruto awkwardly cleared his throat, successfully catching your attention and ruining the little moment. "I hate to ruin your little romantic moment but I think we're getting close to the top floor." he said, gesturing to the numbers slowing to a stop on the 15th floor. Everyone straightened before turning to the opening door.

You didn't know what to expect once the door completely opened.

And once the door was wide open, you were greeted by a little lounge area. This floor seemed to look like it housed one of those more expensive residential apartments. The room was mostly intact with tables and chairs with non-functioning laptops, some magazines, books and even some empty water bottles and coffee cups. Your eyes swept the small lobby only to land on the focal point of the room, the big reception desk. where there were five people perched curiously on top of it. All five of them were staring at the elevator in awe. They seemed to have waited for some players for a while. Now, their wishes were finally answered.

"finally!" a brunette man said, hopping off the desk to greet you, his arms thrown wide as in if to welcome you to their little world. "Welcome! I'm glad you can make it to the Jack of clubs game venue!" he bowed elegantly, a bright and charming smile on his face. Everyone in your group- including you- pulled back. This was definitely not something you would have foreseen. You imagined all the game masters to be serious and intimidating like the king of spades, not bubbly and charming like the man in front of you.

You saw kenma's hands ball into fists in his pockets. You watched as Haruto swept his ginger hair back, attempting to be more intimidating. Daiton, who wore her longer brown hair in a bun, stood beside you with a skeptical glare, her hand now white as she gripped onto the backpack strap that rested around her shoulders. Aiya's dark blue eyes pierced through the group behind the mysterious man, successfully intimidating them.

the man straightened, his eyes going from his group to yours. a deep tension that wafted around the room. The man waved his hands to bring everyone's attention back to him, thoroughly severing the glares and intimidation from each group. "we're getting too into the fighting spirit here. We haven't even introduced ourselves yet!" the man said with a playful smile. "I'm Akio, jack of clubs. Nice to meet you!" he said, forcefully taking your hand and shaking it enthusiastically. You immediately pulled your hand away and watched as the jack's smile faltered for a split second before he forced it back into place.

Akio turned to the other four people behind him. He took one of the two girls' hands and pulled her down from the counter, spinning her around before bringing her close to him with a charming smile. The blonde girl couldn't help but giggle. "this is Ena. The other lovely lady over there is Hana." he nodded at the brunette who was still perched on the desk. "That's Botan," he pointed to the man in a crisp suit "and that's Hiro." finally pointing to the buff man who looked your group up and down, seemingly attempting to read you.

Aiya only rolled her eyes. "enough with the introductions. We came for the game. Let's get it over with." she said. Akio pulled away from Ena with a chuckle. He went back behind the desk to grab an envelope, waving it in the air. "I was just about to get to that." he said as he tried to stifle a laugh. "we're going to find out the game together."

"Wait, I thought you're the jack of clubs," you couldn’t help but blurt out, eyes swimming in confusion. "aren't you the one who made the game?"

"I'm not that good with planning so the king of clubs made it for me." he gave a sad, almost nostalgic smile. He took the letter in both of his hands. "He was supposed to be here to personally explain the rules to us but alas, someone challenged him yesterday and now he's-" he didn't continue his sentence, opting to run his thumb over his neck playfully.

Your eyes widened. The king of clubs is dead?

The silence only lasted for a short second before Akio tore the letter open eagerly, his childish grin back on his face. "Well, we shouldn't dwell on the past. We're here to play the game so let's see what this letter has to say!" he opened it and skimmed through its contents. Akio cleared his throat as his eyes drifted back to the top of the page. Seconds passed by like hours as you waited anxiously for what he was going to say next.

"game: escape room

Both teams will be locked into separate rooms and will go head to head to try to find the four-digit code and the exit first. You will have one hour to do so.

Be careful, a poisonous gas will start seeping into your room. Maybe you want to crack the code sooner rather than later."

Nobody said a peep. Everyone in the room was trying to make sense of the information- or lack there off- given to you.

The rules were so vague. What were they supposed to do with the code? Were they supposed to memorize it for later?

There was another problem. Even the supposed game master doesn't even know what they were getting into. He didn't know the rules or what was inside the rooms. You knew that he wouldn't be able to answer your questions.

But there was a silver lining to this. If Akio was telling the truth and he didn't know what was happening, then you were on the same playing field. Anything can happen now. You had a shot at winning this.

"Well, if we nobody has any questions, I say we just dive in." said Ena, shrugging as she jumped off the desk. the other members of their group, including the jack himself, nodded. The blonde went over and opened one of the two doors that were situated on either side of the reception desk. You looked over Ena's shoulder to see a cluttered apartment. You expected there to be another corridor leading to the rooms but you guessed that the king might've changed the layout just for this floor. You attempted to look over their shoulders to no avail. Akio gave one last, friendly wave before he closed the door behind him.

You and Kenma looked back at Haruto, Aiya and Daiton, all of them nodding in unison. He took his hand out of his pocket and entangled his fingers in yours, a final reassurance before things began to fall into chaos. He pulled you to the other door, his free hand gripping the doorknob. He turned to you and the others one last time.

"Are we ready?"

For a moment, nobody knew how to respond. This might be the last time they were going to be able to talk and express their opinions. Behind that door, you were going to be facing death head on. Who would be ready for that?

You pushed all of those thoughts aside and responded with five simple words. you didn't even know if they were true yourself. But those words helped ease the group's doubts and second thoughts. Those words made Kenma's lips curl into the most smallest and determined smile you've ever seen.

"ready as we'll ever be."

Then, Kenma turned the knob and pushed the door open.

"all players have entered their rooms. Your 1 hour begins now." the intercom echoed before you heard the door lock behind you.

There was no going back now.

The first rule you remembered about escape rooms was to keep your eyes peeled for clues. The second rule you remembered was Don't be afraid to approach or touch something, it might help you one way or another.

You let your eyes scan the room. The "apartment" was all in one small square space. It was more akin to a study rather than a living apartment. you didn't question it. It was better that it was a smaller space rather than having to look for codes in a spacious apartment.

Your eyes drifted to a bookshelf perched in the corner. It was filled to the brim with books, all without their dust jackets. You walked over to it and tried to grab a random one off the shelf to no avail. They were all glued down. There was no use to stay there so you let your eyes drift off to another part of the room.

In the far left corner of the room lies a dark mahogany desk, random papers scattered across it. Kenma and Daiton were quickly skimming through the pages just in case one of those papers contained a clue. You walked over to them.

"Any luck with the shelf?" Kenma asked the moment he spotted you approaching them. He didn't even look up to meet your eyes. you didn't really mind. In fact, It reminded you of the times before you even got transported to this place, where you would approach Kenma while he played his video games. He could always answer your inquiries and even start conversations despite not making eye contact with you. He can talk and express his opinions all while being laser focused on a task. It was just an old habit of his, a useful one at that.

"nope. The books are all glued down. Have you checked the drawers?" you asked, picking up the already neat stack of checked papers in one corner of the desk.

Kenma nodded his head. "we checked it. No luck there either. No false bottoms, no etches." he mumbled as he picked up another piece of paper and let his cat-like gaze skim through it. You ran your hand through it before you placed it back down.

You let your eyes scan over the desk more thoroughly. You were just about to move on and look at another part of the room when you spotted something.

There, hidden under the scattered pieces of paper was a book, similar to the ones on the shelf. You picked it up and turned it in your hand. It looked like one of those normal novels but your gut told you otherwise. You opened quickly turned the pages only for it to turn out…

"uh, kenma," the setter looked up at you in confusion for him to spot the book in your hand. You walked over to stand beside him, lending the book over so he could examine it himself. "You might want to see this."

Without question, kenma took the book from you and began skimming through the pages.

Once again, sorry for the sudden cliffhanger! I didn't want this to be really long so cutting it in half would be the best option! Hope you guys enjoyed this! Love you all ❤️💖💕
